Bilinski takes win number 6 in Christchurch
Bold moves and brilliant performances at Euromarque Motorsport Park
Round 4 of the Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Championship at Euromarque Motorsport Park witnessed another one of Roman Bilinski’s remarkable displays of race craft. With pole position secured in both qualifying sessions and an impressive performance throughout the races, the British-Polish driver cemented his lead in the championship standings.
Bilinski started off the weekend by clinching pole position in both Qualifying sessions. His lap time of 1:16.818 in the first Qualifying was nearly a match for the championship’s fastest lap set by Jehan Daruvala in 2017 (1:16.800). Reflecting on his performance, Bilinski said “So happy to get a pole here, what a quali! I really left it to the last minute and just gave it everything on the last lap. Should be great to watch on the TV!”
Leading into Turn 1 in the first race, he remained unbothered by ensuing chaos caused by contact in the pack behind. Bilinski kept a handle on the lead and fought off a charging Liam Sceats to bring home victory in a controlled demeanour, snatching up the fastest lap of the race along the way.
Race 2 with a reverse grid saw the M2 Competition driver put pressure on his rivals, delivering incredible late braking and overtaking moves as he fought his way to the front from P8. In a calculated approach to preserve his P1 standing in the championship, he avoided taking unnecessary risks and secured a P4 finish.
In the last race of the weekend, Bilinski set out to give his main championship contender Sceats a hard time. Both drivers traded fastest laps and remained within fractions of each other throughout the race, with tire management ultimately becoming the deciding factor and Bilinski finishing behind Sceats in a well fought P2.
As the series heads to its final round at Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell, Bilinski maintains his lead in the championship standings.
